Abu Dhabi-UAE: 10 December, 2013 – Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council's Standing Technical Committee for Energy, Water, Waste and the Built Environment today officially released a set of five Abu Dhabi Specifications (ADS) seeking to standardise the quality of plastic pipes, LED lighting and pesticides management in the emirate.

QCC's   Standing Technical Committee (STC)  is made up of representatives from all of the Abu Dhabi Regulatory Authorities dealing with technical standards on Energy, Water, Waste and the Built Environment. It reviews and endorses recommendations from the QCC Working Groups which are tasked with achieving consensus on technical requirements.

QCC aims to harmonize technical specifications applied by regulators in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi and, where appropriate, submits the technical recommendations to the Emirates Authority for Standards and Metrology (ESMA) for consideration as UAE standards.

Prior to the release of the recommendations, QCC through successful collaboration achieved consensus in the technical working groups for plastic pipes, energy and pesticides management. As part of this process, QCC consulted with relevant federal agencies and factored in the feedback provided by industry stakeholders in Abu Dhabi.

Abdulla Abdulla Al Suwaidi, Director of Standardization Services and Chairman of the Standing Technical Committee, QCC, said: "The ADS documents released here today mark yet another milestone in QCC's efforts to promote the Emirate's quality-enabled infrastructure as mandated in the Abu Dhabi Economic Vision 2030. With the capital city aiming to position itself among the world leaders for its advanced quality infrastructure, QCC ensures that the Emirate benefits from national UAE standards where available and works as a catalyst to ensure that coordinated efforts reflect the Abu Dhabi economy's requirements relating to standards. In doing so, we aim to safeguard the safety and security of our consumers throughout the emirate."

The QCC Working Group for Plastic Pipes, established in June 2013, includes as members Al Ain City Municipality, Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority, Abu Dhabi Municipality, Abu Dhabi Distribution Company, Al Ain Distribution Company, Borouge Pte, the Gulf Plastic Pipe Academy, Abu Dhabi Transmission and Dispatch Company, and Anabeeb Pipes.

The QCC Working Group for Energy (LED lighting) includes ESMA, Department of Municipal Affairs, Municipality of Abu Dhabi City, Abu Dhabi Distribution Company, Department of Transport, as well as 10 private sector companies, while the QCC Working Group for Pesticide Management consists of ESMA, Abu Dhabi Urban Planning Council, Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority, Abu Dhabi Municipality, Health Authority – Abu Dhabi, Abu Dhabi Farmers Services Centre, Abu Dhabi Food Control Authority, and the Environmental Agency.

The QCC set of standards contributes to the assessment of the products, equipment and services traded in the emirate to ensure technical flaws are minimised and product efficiency optimised. Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council Launches Campaign to Raise Awareness on ‘Manaa’ Online Portal

Abu Dhabi-UAE: 07 November, 2013 – Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council (QCC) has launched a week-long education and awareness campaign about the Manaa online portal that allows consumers to report unsafe products as well as reporting injuries resulting from the use of such products. The system also provides detailed lists of products that do not comply with QCC's quality standards and have been recalled from the Abu Dhabi market.

The awareness and education campaign will continue to run until the end of the week at Al Wahda Mall in Abu Dhabi, followed by Al Ain Mall and Al Gharbia, as well as a number of schools and universities around the emirate.

In addition to introducing the public to the benefits of using the Manaa online portal, the awareness initiative provides information on consumer awareness and injuries that can occur from unsafe products. The campaign suggests methods on how victims of such injuries could report those injuries. Highlighting QCC's role in ensuring products' compliance with certain safety standards and its efforts to clear the market from products that do not conform to such standards, the campaign guides consumers on how to report defective or 'withdrawn' products that they may find on the shelves of stores in the capital.

Abdullah Al Khoury, acting Executive Director of Consumer and Market Services, at Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council, said: "This campaign reflects the commitment of QCC in raising quality standards and strengthening the level of consumer awareness in Abu Dhabi. We encourage consumers to register through the system and contribute in reporting unsafe products. Increasing public awareness about quality standards in the emirate is our key priority at QCC, and ensuring public safety, security and health is our biggest reward. "

Manaa aims to maximise product quality and safety standards in Abu Dhabi through the careful monitoring and control of commodities, and is an efficient system to record consumer feedback. It is a unique interactive portal that offers maximum flexibility to the user while browsing, registering and reporting. The website registration and forms can be completed in a number of ways including filling out a form, voice recording or through entering contact details. The customer can in turn expect a response call from a service representative. To register, and for more information, consumers can log onto www.manaa.ae.

Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council signs memorandum of understanding with BSI

Reducing the cost of multi-billion pound infrastructure projects in Abu Dhabi and lowering trade barriers with the UK were key priorities during a delegation visit from Quality and Conformity Council (QCC) and Abu Dhabi's municipal authorities. This led to the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between QCC and BSI, the business standards company, to improve and strengthen the economic relationship between Abu Dhabi and the UK.

His Excellency Hussain Salem Al Katheeri, Secretary General of QCC and Howard Kerr, Chief Executive of BSI, signed the MoU in the presence of senior officials from both the organizations. The signing ceremony was held at BSI's global headquarters in Chiswick, London.

Using standardization will enable QCC to provide quality infrastructure in line with global standards, reduce costs, and facilitate trade as the agreement also supports British companies looking to win business in Abu Dhabi. One example of how standards are not only facilitating trade but also assisting with reducing costs is their implementation by QCC to lower the costs of major infrastructure projects.

The MoU has been developed to strengthen bilateral cooperation between the two organizations in the fields of standardization and conformity assessment such as certification, testing, management systems, and any other related fields.

Speaking after the signing ceremony His Excellency Hussain Salem Al Katheeri, said it was an important step towards QCC's pursuit of attaining global standards in all areas of its operations and achieving its mission.

"Our vision to lead, facilitate and develop an efficient, effective and globally integrated quality infrastructure will be hugely supported by cooperation with BSI. We look forward to working in partnership to improve the quality of products, both national and imported, as well as compliance with European standards and assistance with access to European markets," His Excellency Hussain Salem Al Katheeri, Secretary General of QCC explained.

Howard Kerr, Chief Executive of BSI said: "We know that where the same agreed standards and conformity assessment requirements exist between two countries, companies find it easier to sell their products and services in both countries. BSI and QCC's efforts to reduce the barriers to trade with the common aim of learning from each other's experience for mutual benefit will facilitate bilateral trade between the UK and Abu Dhabi. We share QCC's vision for providing quality infrastructure in line with globally recognized standards for governments, business and consumers."

During QCC's visit to the UK, senior officials from the organization and Abu Dhabi's municipal authorities also met with Lord Green of Hurstpierpoint, Minister of State for Trade and Investment, government officials and construction industry specialists to discuss how the UK is using standards to effectively manage major infrastructure projects such as Crossrail.
